Is NYC cold in January? That would be a yes.  Is it possible to get caught in a massive snow storm during January?  Also a yes.  Should we care?  Nope.  Because we will all be inside, enjoying some of the most important and interesting art and antiques shows in the country.  January in NYC is All About Art and Antiques!

The Winter Show

Art and Antiques Winter Show booth detail

Per the web site, “The Winter Show is the leading art, antiques, and design fair in America, featuring 70 of the world’s top experts in the fine and decorative arts.  Held at the historic Park Avenue Armory in New York City, the Fair highlights a dynamic mix of works dating from ancient times through the present day, and maintains the highest standards of quality in the art market. Each object at the Fair is vetted for authenticity, date, and condition by a committee of 150 experts from the United States and Europe.”  The show runs January 18-27 with a very swanky Opening Night Gala on the 17th.  For ticket information, click here.  And for more detailed information about The Winter Show, click here to read a post I wrote in 2018.  My husband and I will be in attendance for the 5th year in a row, and would not miss this show for all the tea in China.  It’s truly amazing!

The Outsider Art Fair

Art and Antiques Outsider Art Fair Booth Detail

Running January 17-20 at the Metropolitan Pavilion, The Outsider Art Fair is one of my absolute favorites!  Over sixty dealers, including our dear friends Joshua Lowenfels and Steven Powers, will exhibit works by self-taught artists, ranging from paintings, sculpture and iron works to photography and folk art.  There’s an energy and vibrancy at this show that is exciting, and you really never know what you are going to see.  For more information, click here.  Oh, and….you might recognize two of the people in the banner photograph on their web site.  Not gonna lie, we are kind of a big deal. (ha!!!)

Americana Week at Christie’s

Art and Antiques Auction Gavel

Another fun way to enjoy art and antiques in NYC during January is to attend the previews and sales at the major auction houses in NYC.  Christie’s has two major auctions on January 17 and 18 of Folk Art and Outsider Art, and attending the preview is like a mini visit to a museum, as all the items for sale during the auction are on display.  Click here for more information.

Important Americana at Sotheby’s

Similarly, Sotheby’s is hosting several sales in January, and you can see the full listing here.  We will absolutely preview the Important Americana sale, and my husband might attend the actual auction.  There’s also several educational symposiums being offered, that would an excellent learning opportunity for anyone who wants to learn more about art and antiques.  Click here for more information.

The Art, Design & Antiques Show at Wallace Hall

Art and Antiques Wallace Hall Booth detail

This is a show my husband and I never miss.  In its 3rd year, the Art, Design & Antiques Show at Wallace Hall hosts over thirty dealers, specializing in gorgeous Folk Art, antiques, decorative objects, paintings, jewelry, and more.  Year after year, we always find several treasures to bring back with us to Texas, like the cabinet we picked up last year, pictured above.  The show runs January 18-20.  For more information, click here.

There’s so much to do and see in NYC any time of the year, but in January, for me, it’s all about Art and Antiques.  If you plan to be in the city, and all that antiquing leaves you feeling hungry, you might be interested in my NYC Restaurant Guide.

I’ll be doing a lot of Instagram Live and Instagram Stories, so be sure you are following me on Instagram by clicking here.  And, my husband will be documenting as well, so I’d encourage you to follow him on Instagram as well by clicking here!

Happy treasure hunting friends!
